Nasarawa Government Set to Tackle Tuberculosis and HIV/AIDS

Thursday, July 07, 2005

The Nasarawa state government has restated its commitment to the fight against tuberculosis and the HIV/AIDS pandemic. The assurance was given by Governor Adamu when he received officials of LifeSign HealthCare Limited in his office. Governor Adamu stated that the administration has concluded plans to establish a center of excellence for the treatment of the diseases in the state in addition to requiring all hospitals to establish treatment units for the diseases.

Recalling the situation he met on assumption of office in 1999, Governor Adamu said the health care facilities in the state were not adequate for the largely rural population. He stated that there was only one missionary hospital treating the diseases in 1999, but that this has been increased over the years. The government also partnered with Pro-Health international (a non-governmental health organization) to bring health care to most of the un-reached people in the state.

Governor Adamu then informed the audience that the administration will do everything to provide support for their work in the state which is aimed at eradicating the twin diseases in the state.

Speaking earlier, the leader of the delegation and Managing Director of LifeSign HealthCare Limited, Ramzi Abou-Hassan said they were in the state to understudy areas of partnership with the state towards providing relief for those afflicted with the diseases. He said that his group was ready transfer technology that has been used in 196 countries worldwide to the state which will help in combating the diseases throughout the state.

In the delegation to the Governor’s office were Rita Bergendahl and the state commissioner for health.
