We Must Defend Democratic Values

Governor Abdullahi Adamu has urged community/cultural associations in Nasarawa state to defend the nations hard won democracy. The Governor was speaking during a cultural carnival to mark the creation of Akwanga West Local Government at Rinze, headquarters of the local government.

Governor Adamu said he joined the people of the local government in rejoicing over the creation of the local government reminding them that it was one of the great achievements of Nigeria ’s democratic rule. He said the creation of the local government gave expression to the peoples need for freedom and thus they had a duty to nurture the local government to great heights. One of the ways to do this is to learn to accept all peoples as legitimate residents of the local government. He reminded the people that various individuals will come to the local government for business purposes; they should be accommodated as that was a sure way to get the local government developed.

Governor Adamu used the occasion to remind the people of the impending voter registration exercise and urged them to ensure that they came out enmasse for registration. He said this was the only way they could exercise their franchise and sustain democracy. We urged them to be careful of those they voted for in the forthcoming local government and other elections so that they will enjoy the dividends of democracy.

Speaking earlier, both the Acting Chairman, Akwanga-West Local Government, Mallam Yusuf Ahmed and President, Mada Development Association, Mr. John Danboyi commended Governor Abdullahi Adamu for creating Akwanga-West local government. They pledged their support and loyalty to the government and urged Governor Adamu to contest for the 2003 gubernatorial elections. They pledged the support of the Mada people when the Governor eventually took the decision to contest the elections.

Prominent Mada sons for across the country attended the carnival, which featured various traditional dancing groups from the community.
