Nasarawa State Government proposes 17 additional local governments

Governor Abdullahi Adamu has proposed the creation of 17 additional local governments in the state. Governor Adamu announced this while addressing a special session of the House of Assembly in Lafia on Wednesday, October 17, 2001.

The proposal is the result of painstaking consultation and discussion with the people of the state which spanned many months. Governor Adamu stated that "after a careful appraisal and consideration of the Hussaini Abdullahi committee report and recommendations, Government proposes to create 17 new Local Government Areas if the outcome of the proposed referendum in the affected areas support this position". The local governments recommended for creation are:

Azara Local Government Area from Awe;
Doma South Local Government Area from Doma;
Giza Local Government Area from Keana;
Jenkwe Local Government Area from Obi;
 Lafia South Local Government Area from Lafia;
 Lafia North Local Government Area from Lafia;
 Rinze Local Government Area from Akwanga;
 Farin Ruwa Local Government Area from Wamba;
 Akun Local Government Area from Nassarawa-Eggon;
 Agidi Local Government Area from Nassarawa-Eggon;
 Agwada Local Government Area from Kokona;
 Udege Local Government Area from Nasarawa;
 Loko Local Government Area from Nasarawa;
 Karshi Local Government Area from Karu;
 Panda Local Government Area from karu.
 Umaisha Local Government Area form Toto;
 Gadabuke Local Government Area from Toto;

Governor Adamu urged all those whose aspirations were not met to have faith in God as their hopes will be fulfilled one day soon.

The House of Assembly will now consider the proposal and pass a motion urging the Executive branch of Government to conduct a referendum in the affected local governments throughout the state.
