Governor Adamu Tasks Religious Leaders

 Governor Adamu addressing the delegationNasarawa State Governor, Alhaji Abdullahi Adamu, has called for joint efforts between the government and religious bodies to improve the living standard of Nigerians. Governor Adamu made this call Wednesday, May 02, 2001, when the Catholic Bishop of Lafia Diocese, Most Reverend Mathew Ishaya Audu, paid him a courtesy call at the Government house Lafia.

The Governor specifically urged religious leaders to emphasize the need for peaceful co-existence among their followers. He said peace was the basis for achieving socio-economic development, which will improve the people’s standard of living.

Some members of the Bishop’s delegationGovernor Adamu enjoined adherents of the various religions in the country to develop understanding and respect for each other’s faith. He said God has a purpose for making mankind to be followers of the various religions; otherwise He would have made us to be followers of one religion.

Governor Adamu then commended the Church in Nigeria for its contribution to the promotion of and development of Western education, as well as the provision of health care services to the people.

Bishop Audu reading his addressHe also commended the Church for its involvement in direct community development, pointing out that this will facilitate rapid socio-economic development.

Earlier, the Most Rev. Mathew Ishaya Audu commended Governor Adamu for the laudable achievement of his administration in the education and health sectors.

Reverend Audu said the rehabilitation of schools, hospitals and health centres by the Governor Adamu administration has rekindled hope among the people.

He assured the Governor that the Catholic Church would do everything required to assist the state government in its determination to improve the lives of the people. He said the Church stands as a partner in progress and not rivals to the government.

Reverend Audu emphasized the need for the Church and government to compliment each other as partners for the common good and interest of the people. According to him, that would be the only way to promote true justice, peace, harmony and integral human development.

The Bishop was accompanied to the Government house by a delegation of church priests and officials, while members of the state executive council witnessed the occasion.
