Governor Adamu urges tolerance amongst communities

Governor Abdullahi Adamu has urged citizens of the state to learn the virtues of tolerance in order to promote harmonious existence among the various communities in the state. He stated this while receiving the report of the judicial commission of inquiry into the communal disturbances that recently occurred in the Nasarawa South Senatorial District.

Governor Adamu stated that mutual acceptance of each other was essential for the development of democracy and any diversion from this ideal was bound to create anomy in the system. He therefore pledged that Government would not spare any person or institution that might have been found liable by the commission. He said all those found wanting will be treated as may be required by the law, adding that the police and ministry of justice has been so instructed.

The governor reiterated government’s commitment to restoring peace and normalcy to the affected areas. He used the occasion to thank all those who supported the government during the crisis and provided succour for displaced persons. While promising that government will expediciously study the report, he called on all communities in the area to reconcile, forgive each other and forget the past.

Earlier in a speech at the occasion, the chairman of the commission, Justice Aminu Nasir Sanusi thanked the government for entrusting them with such an enormous task. He reported that the committee started public sitting on 18th June 2001. Thereafter, the crisis escalated and this consequently required the expansion of the scope of their work.

Justice Sanusi said that in the course of their sitting, the received 40 memoranda; 32 exhibits and 39 persons testified before the committee. He said the report treated each local government in the senatorial district separately because of the peculiarities of each environment. He therefore urged government to implement their recommendations for lasting peace in the area.
