PRESS RELEASE

Members of the general public, the citizens of Nasarawa State in particular are hereby informed of yet another unfortunate and unprovoked attack directed at His Excellency the Executive Governor of Nasarawa State, Alhaji Abdullahi Adamu (Sarkin Yakin Keffi).

The incident occurred on 22nd June 2002, after the Governor had seen-off some State Governors and other Guests who had come to Lafia to attend the Appeal Fund Launching for the Lafia Central Mosque.

As the Governor was driving past the personal residence of Distinguished Senator, Alhaji Haruna Abubakar, along Shendam Road Lafia, a group of youth suddenly emerged from the house and attacked the Governor's convoy with stones and other missiles.

In the course of this unprovoked attack, the Governor's official car was damaged.

A number of other Government Officials including the Commissioner for Local Governments and Chieftaincy Affairs, Alhaji Halilu Bala Usman and their vehicles were also attacked. The State Commissioner of Police and the Nasarawa State Director of the State Security Services (SSS) and other security personel who were also in the convoy, witnessed the incident.

We observed that most of the perpetrators of this dastardly act were young boys with one or two elders at the background instigating them.

His Excellency, Governor Abdullahi Adamu hereby condemns this act of political thuggery and provocation.

The Governor highly regrets that youth are being used as canon fodders to serve the interest of few selfish individuals.

Nevertheless, His Excellency appeals to his teeming supporters and law abiding citizens of Nasarawa State to remain calm and peaceful. It is the strong desire of His Excellency that nobody should hide under the cover of this incident to take the laws into their hands

The Police are already investigating the incident with a view to bringing all culprits to book.

The State Government wishes to re-assure all and sundry that it remains committed and determined in its efforts to ensure the peaceful coexistence of all law abiding citizens within the state which is necessary for the legitimate pursuit of their lawful businesses.
