Our Economy Has Nose-Dived

Wednesday, June 26, 2002

Governor Adamu has said that the nation's economy has nose-dived. The Governor was speaking while playing host to three communities who paid him separate courtesy calls in Government House Lafia. Governor Adamu stated that this situation made it difficult for governments across the country to satisfy the yearnings of their people as well as fulfill electoral promises.

Governor Adamu appealed to the people to show more understanding of the situation, saying it was not necessary to be pretentious about the economic condition. He traced the genesis of the economic slump to the September 11, 2001 attack at the World Trade Center in the United States. He explained that as a result of the attack, companies and businesses the world-over were experiencing a downturn in their operations. Consequent upon this, the demand and price for the nation’s major export – Petroleum – had fallen, affecting the nations earnings. He promised that as soon as the situation improved, every community would definitely feel the impact of his government.

Turning to the forthcoming local government elections scheduled for August 10, 2002, Governor Adamu urged the people to present well tested and proved candidates so that they too will enjoy the dividends of democracy at the grassroots. He urged them to continue to support the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) for the implementation of people oriented programmes. He also appealed to them to consider giving women some elective positions in the local council as the party had a deliberate policy of encouraging the womenfolk.

Speaking separately, the communities from Wamba, Nasarawa and Obi Local Councils commended the governor for the giant developmental strides being witnessed in the areas of health, education and rural development. They mentioned various projects which have been completed in their areas and urged the governor to remain resolute in his people oriented programmes. They expressed their sympathies over the attack by some thugs in Lafia recently stating that the perpetuators of such dastardly acts need to be brought to book. They urged the governor to re-contest for the position of Governor in the 2003 governorship elections, promising him their support when he so decides.

Senior members of the government and top politicians were in attendance at the courtesy calls.
