In Kaduna, Governor Adamu Challenges Northern Nigerian Press

Tuesday, June 28, 2005

A challenge has been thrown to the Press in Northern Nigeria to be much more vibrant and enterprising in the defence of the interests of the North. This challenge was thrown by Governor Adamu while making opening remarks at a media chat organized for him by the Arewa Media Forum in Kaduna.

Asking the question, "where is the Northern press," Governor Adamu wondered why it had become the lot of most northern media houses to close up after a few years of operation. He lamented the case of the New Nigerian, the Democrat and the Reporter, wondering thus: "is there something, I wonder, that makes it impossible for newspapers to survive in this part of the country? Perhaps, the answer lies in our stubborn refusal to appreciate the role the news media play in the development of societies and in the contest for power, particularly in a democracy."

Governor Adamu used the occasion to call on the Northern press to stand up to the challenge of skewed reportage from the southern press which tends to portray the North in bad light. He also called on state governments and the rich in the North to invest in the media industry in order to educate the people for more participation in democracy
