Governor Adamu Heads Committee on National Identity Card and Voters' Registration

[Image]Nigeria's President Olusegun Obasanjo has appointed Governor Abdullahi Adamu to head a Federal Committee on National Identity Card and Voters' Registration Exercise. The committee became necessary as a result of controversies and complaints being raised by members of the public on the conduct of the two exercises.

Governor Adamu who is also the Chairman of the Nigeria Governors' Forum will head the seventeen member committee made up of the following:

· Governor of Cross River state

· Governor of Ekiti state

· Hon. Minister of State for Internal Affairs

· Hon. Justice Mohammed Bello (Rtd.)

· Malam Liman Ciroma

· Emir of Gombe

· Emir of Kazaure

· Olu of Warri

· Ohinoyi of Ebiraland

· Igwe Alex Nwokedi

· Oba Oladele Olashore

· Chief M. T. Mbu

· Bishop A. B. Gbonigi

· Dr. Hakeem Baba Ahmed, Secretary INEC

· Director-General, National Population Commission

· President, National Council of Women Societies

The term of reference of the committee is to look into all aspects of the two exercises, with particular reference to the various concerns and issues raised by all interest groups as well as individuals and advise the Federal Government on the way forward.

The committee which will be inaugurated on Thursday, August 8, 2002, is expected to submit its report within two weeks of it first sitting.

This is the second time President Obasanjo will be appointing Governor Adamu to head a national committee. It will be recalled that Governor Adamu was appointed as the Chairman of the National Committee on Provisions on Citizenship Rights and Privileges.
