American State Department Official Visits Nasarawa State

[Image]An official of the United States Department of State has visited Nasarawa state in continuation of consultations by the State Department on the on-going preparations for the 2003 elections. Mr. Douglas Rohn, Deputy Director in the Bureau for African Affairs was accompanied by Mr. Oliver Kinder of the American Embassy in Abuja.

Briefing Governor Adamu on the purpose of their visit, Mr. Rohn stated that he came to Nigeria in order to help the state department understand the peculiarities of the Nigerian political situation and to consult with political leaders about how best to ensure a smooth electoral process in 2003. He said such consultations were necessary for both parties to understand the problems of the Nigerian state as it transits to full democracy.

[Image]Responding, Governor Adamu thanked the officials for the visit and said discussions with them will be frank and open. He praised the American model of democracy, describing it as the best. He said the concerns of the State Department were very understandable as Nigeria was the biggest country in Africa and its destiny was tied to the rest of the continent.

Governor Adamu who is also the Chairman of the Nigeria Governor’s Forum used the occasion to brief the visitors on the arrangements being made by the state for the 2003 elections.
