Mass turnout at a rally to adopt Governor Adamu as 2003 gubernatorial election candidate

Saturday, August 31, 2002

Saturday the 17th of August 2002. Lafia, the capital city of Nasarawa State, witnessed a phenomenal event as the people of Nasarawa South Senatorial came out in their multitudes in a rally organized to express solidarity with Governor Abdullahi Adamu and his administration. The rally, which held at the Lafia Stadium, saw representatives of every tribe in the eleven local government areas of the District in colourful parades, singing songs of solidarity with the government and person of Governor Abdullahi Adamu.

Addressing the Governor and the multitudes gathered in the stadium, political and community leaders of the various communities in the District affirmed that they had the mandate of their people to adopt Governor Abdullahi Adamu as their preferred candidate for the 2003 gubernatorial election. "Our people have mandated us to tell you they want you to contest the 2003 elections as our candidate. We hereby offer our support to you and we want you as Governor of our dear State till 2007." They urged Governor Adamu to use the platform provided him through the rally to flag off his re-election campaign.

In his response, Governor Abdullahi thanked the people of the District for the valuable support his government has enjoyed from them. He expressed his appreciation for the understanding they have shown to his government in the face of the most daunting challenges the people and the government have had to contend with. He, however, declined the offer to launch his re-election campaign there and then. "Power is of God, and only those empowered by God will rule," Governor Adamu said. "We will fix an appropriate date when I will publicly and definitely respond to these appeals from the people in line with the will of God. The only worrisome thing we presently have to contend with is that we have among us people hell-bent on derailing our hard-won democratic liberties. People who go about trying to undermine our democratic institutions and government. We have such people right here among us in Nasarawa State."

"Let me assure you," Governor Adamu continued, "we will continue with the work before us, not allowing ourselves to sidetracked. If we conclude our term in office without transforming for the better the lot of our people we would have gravely offended against God." He appealed to the people to seek peace, love and harmonious co-existence, pointing out that the government and people of Nasarawa State have a lot to thank God for. "If we will not thank God for his goodness and mercy to us in Nasarawa State, we will be forced to contend with His wrath," he said.

Governor Adamu then promised to upgrade traditional institutions in the State. "We will also create more chiefdoms in the State," he assured the people.

The rally had political leaders from the District, elected and appointed representatives in all tiers of government and traditional rulers and community leaders in attendance. The rally was the third of its kind after the rallies in Keffi and Akwanga organised by Nasarawa West and Nasarawa North Senatorial Districts respectively.
