730 Youths Commence National Service in Nasarawa State

A new batch of fresh University graduates has commenced their national service in Nasarawa state. The one-year compulsory National Youth Service is open to all Nigerians who are less than 30 years of age and is meant to promote national integration.

[Image]Speaking at the swearing-in ceremony of the corps members posted to Nasarawa State, Governor Abdullahi Adamu urged them to imbibe the virtues of discipline, hard work and community spirit. He enjoined them to take with utmost seriousness the noble call to national service and dedicate themselves towards achieving the scheme's goal of national unity and development.

This years second batch orientation camp which is taking place at the Government College Keffi, is composed of 446 males and 284 female graduates. Governor Adamu reminded the corps members of their role in shaping Nigeria's nascent democracy while at the same time reminding them that the orientation course is the take-off point in their march towards greater heights and future attainments. According to governor Adamu, the "camp is designed to acquaint you with the ways and norms of your host communities. It is designed to educate you on their socio-political and cultural background. All this is intended to expose you to the peculiar challenges of your host communities so you can assist them to creatively meet these challenges".

[Image]Continuing, the Governor said, "the physical and psychological training you will undergo in the camp should instill in you the requisite qualities of discipline, perseverance and endurance, and the ability to live amicably with your fellow Nigerians from different parts of the country. I, therefore, urge you to take the exercise very seriously and cooperate with the course officials to ensure the success of this orientation programme.

Speaking earlier, the NYSC State Director, Mrs. Philomena Imohe reminded the corps members that the orientation camp was meant to provide them with the requisite mental and physical training required for national service and life thereafter. She said the swearing in ceremony marked their formal enlistment into national service and a great opportunity for them to showcase their love for Nigeria.

Members of the state executive and security councils, traditional rulers, state and local government officials attended the ceremony.
