Wednesday, September 25, 2002

[Image]Governor Abdullahi Adamu has said that his government will continue to give education its highest priority because it was the only way to nurture the country’s nascent democracy. He made this declaration while flagging off the year 2002/2003 enrollment drive and the official commencement of the new academic year for Nasarawa state. The ceremony, which took place in the ancient city of Awe, provided the ideal opportunity for Governor Adamu to call on all citizens of Nasarawa state to take advantage of government’s policies on education to educate their children and wards.

[Image]Governor Adamu stated that Nasarawa state has been recognized as the only one in the federation that has consistently spent 28% of her annual budget on education, surpassing the United Nations recommendation of 26%. This effort by Nasarawa state has received the commendation of both local and international organizations. Nasarawa state will therefore spared no effort to ensure that its people benefited from the huge investments it was making in education.

The school enrollment drive is designed as an annual event to encourage parents around the state to send their wards to school. Governor Adamu used the occasion to call on all parents to take advantage of the state universal basic education scheme which makes education free of tuition for all children up to junior secondary school. He said this year, government may be forces to sanction parents of children who were not enrolled in schools. He therefore urged community and traditional authorities to be on the lookout for those who may be unwilling to heed government directives.

To match the expected rise in female enrollment, Mrs. Jakonda said 3 new model girl primary schools were being established across the state. She commended Governor Adamu for the support her board has received for Government over the years and said that all schools now have enough materials for teaching and instruction.

Traditional, community and government officials were well represented at the ceremony.
