Howard Strauss, Canadian High Commissioner Visits Nasarawa State

Friday, October 04, 2002

[Image]The Canadian High Commissioner to Nigeria, Howard Strauss, today began a 2-day visit to Nasarawa state. Receiving the High Commissioner in his office, Governor Adamu said the state was delighted to receive such an august visitor. The Governor said that as a young state, it was battling with the issues of development, which meant that it had to put more efforts to alleviating the suffering of its people.

Running down the memory lane, Governor Adamu informed the High Commissioner that the creation of Nasarawa state was the culmination of many years of struggle for the development of the area. Initial efforts at development were not well coordinated because it was handled by the military. However, with the return to democratic government, the people’s aspirations for development were higher than available resources. It was therefore necessary for the government to be in consort with other nations and institutions to address the concerns of the people.

He said that government had tried to create the enabling environment for the business class to prosper and called on the high commissioner to facilitate bi-lateral trade relations with the state.

Speaking earlier, the High Commissioner stated that Canada was interested in the development of Nigeria, especially as it stood firm to ensure that democracy was restored to Nigeria. He said in realization of this objective, the Canadian Government had contributed US$20 million to the World Health Organization for the fight against Polio and associated diseases. He added that Canada was presently training electoral personal as a way of promoting democratic ideals. In appreciation of Nigeria’s efforts at democracy, the High Commissioner said the Canadian Government has now re-opened its visa office in Lagos.

The wife of the High Commissioner accompanied him to Nasarawa state while members of the state executive council were in attendance.
