Our Youth Must Be the Vanguard of Our Democracy

Tuesday, October 08, 2002

Governor Abdullahi Adamu has called on Nigerian youth to strive to uphold the tenets of democracy, transparency and discipline. He made this called while addressing members of the National Youth Service Corps, NYSC, who have just concluded their orientation programme at Keffi. In his words, "I urge you to be true purveyors of the principles of honesty, patriotism and dedication. This is your opportunity to be catalysts of accelerated development in the various communities of the State".

The scheme was established in 1973 as a way of encouraging national integration and cohesion. This year, 783 corps members are being deployed to the field in Nasarawa state. Governor Adamu used the occasion of the passing out parade to remind the youth that anti-democratic agents still abound in out society and they should therefore seek to enlighten the societies where they will be posted on the virtues of democracy. He said that Nigeria looked on them to strengthen the democratic spirit among the people.

She was therefore of no doubt that the corps members will demonstrate a high sense of responsibility in their places of primary assignment. She urged those to whom they will be posted not to reject corps members and to ensure that they were fully utilized.

The passing out ceremony brings to an end the orientation programme for the one-year compulsory service for young Nigerian university graduates.
