Campaign Team Arrives Azara, Awe and Keana

Tuesday, April 08, 2003

If the crowds that turned out to welcome Governor Adamu to Azara, Awe and Keana local government areas are anything to go by, then the gubernatorial elections can be said to have been won by him. In what took everybody by surprise, almost the whole of the populations in these areas came out to welcome the Governor in their areas, dwarfing what had been seen in other areas.

[Image]An indication of what to expect began quite early in the morning when the campaign team arrived Dadarre on the way to Azara. The whole town had gathered and taken over the road, insisting that they wanted to see Governor Adamu address them. The team had to option than to accede to the request of the people. And when Governor Adamu alighted from his vehicle, the crowds when into a frenzy. Music, dancing, drumming and hailing took over. For close to thirty minutes, the jubilation of the people could not be controlled. The sheer joy of having their Governor in their midst was overwhelming. Governor Adamu thereafter assured the people that if re-elected, he was prepared to provide amenities that will improve their living standards.

[Image]All through the way to Azara, the scenario was repeated. In the circumstance, the team did not get to Azara till about 1.30pm for a programme that was scheduled to commence at 10.00am. If the team was sorry for arriving late for the programme, the crowd at Azara was not perturbed. What seemed like the whole local government population was on hand to receive the Governor. There was therefore no need for all the preliminaries of a rally. The rally was a carnival or what could be described as a victory rally.

[Image]At Awe and Keana, the same scenario played out itself. Indeed the crowds were so much that the rallies were just a musical celebration of anticipated victory.

In all the rallies, all that remained for Governor Adamu was to inform the people to look out for the umbrella sign when the ballot papers were handed over to them. He said voting massively for the PDP was the only way of ensuring the stability of democracy in Nigeria as the party had experienced hands in governance.

During the rallies, various party candidates were presented to the people as contestants for various elective offices.

As in other places, Governor Adamu paid courtesy calls on the traditional rulers of the areas visited. Top politicians in the state have likewise continued to follow the governor on the campaign tour. The tour continues to various other local areas.
