Saturday, April 19, 2003

[Image]The Presidential and Gubernatorial elections have commenced in Nasarawa State. The first family comprising of Governor Adamu and his wife, Hajia Khadija Adamu voted at the Government college polling station at 10.15am this morning. The Governor who is contesting the elections on the platform of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) went through the normal accreditation procedures before being issued with the two ballot papers for the election.

The atmosphere at the polling station was peaceful and orderly as the people conducted themselves in a matured manner. Speaking to newsmen after casting his vote, Governor Adamu praised the electoral body for the promptness with which voting materials arrived the stations and for the general improvements noticed in the conduct of the elections as against what was noticed last Saturday.

[Image]Governor Adamu who had in a statewide radio and television broadcast last called on the people to come out and massively voted for the PDP said he was impressed with voter turn out thus far. He deplored the culture of politicians who do not accept defeat as the will of the people and frowned at statements made by one of the presidential candidates urging civil disobedience if he failed to win. He said this kind of attitude continues haunt our democracy and must be resisted at all cost. He thanked the people of Nasarawa state for the confidence reposed on the PDP during the last elections saying that he was confident of victory during today’s elections.
