Tuesday, April 29, 2003

[Image]Lafia, the capital city of Nasarawa state stood on its toes today as a triumphant Governor Abdullahi Adamu rode through its streets in his first entry after the gubernatorial elections which he won. Party big wigs, youth organizations and the civil society all came out to welcome the man they have decided to make the first citizen of Nasarawa state for the next four years.

Governor Adamu who hitherto had been in Keffi his political base decided return to Government House, Lafia where he will hold forth for the next four years. The reception party commenced from Keffi where Governor Adamu started the day with a chat with pressmen. During the chat, the re-elected Governor expounded on the philosophy of his government during the next tenure. He said he will concentrate on developing a solid economic foundation for the state and continue with his educational policies. He said health will also receive renewed attention as much as he will see to it that the rural areas were accessible to modern infrastructural facilities. He stretched the olive branch to his co-contestants, asking them to team up with him for the development of Nasarawa state.

[Image]After the press chat, Governor Adamu rode in a long convoy of vehicles to Akwanga where a large group of people where waiting to receive him. The erstwhile Minister of State for the FCT, Solomon Ewuga led the group of prominent citizens from the zone. The elongated convoy then proceeded to the Lafia border where the Deputy Governor, Onje Gye-Wado and others received them.

[Image]The ride from the border to Lafia town which should normally have taken less than fifteen minutes took almost an hour as jubilating crowds lined the road to catch a sight of the Governor. He had to stop at many points as the joyous people insisted on touching their governor. Eventually, when the Governor arrived Lafia, the venue of the reception was turned into a carnival and there was hardly anytime for speeches. The Governor only had time to thank the people of the state for the massive support they gave to him and asked them to vote for the PDP during the state houses of assembly election scheduled for Saturday, May 3, 2003.
