Nasarawa Ready For Governor Adamu's Inauguration

Thursday, May 29, 2003

[Image]Lafia, the capital city of Nasarawa state took on a new look yesterday as activities leading to the swearing-in today of Governor Abdullahi Adamu reached their highest tempo. The people were filled with excitement and expectation, just as visitors streamed into the city from all parts of the country and abroad. Even the trees in the city wore a new look as the birds of the air sang away in relish of the reinvigorated city brought about by an increased tempo of activities and the blessings of a rainfall.

As part of the activities marking the end of the first tenure of Governor Adamu, a novelty match was organized for a selected female team against a selected male team. At the end of the match, which had a double purpose (the end of Governor Adamu's first tenure and the stepping down of the erstwhile deputy governor from the position) both teams settled for a 1-1 draw. But the match was exciting as the female team marked their male counterparts ball for ball. Watched by Governor Adamu, out-going deputy governor, Onje Gye-Wado and in coming deputy governor, Labaran Maku, the match proved to be a wonderful pill in muscle relaxation.

At the well-attended function, Gye-Wado said he served a community and state that was full of hopes and expectations. He counted it a privilege to be a part of a team that saw to the realization of the dream to build a strong prosperous and united state. He said his journey through the last four years was a rewarding experience in which the team sought to balance the challenges of rulership with a commitment to service. He congratulated all the people of Nasarawa for offering advices and encouragement that helped to make Nasarawa a better place than they met it. He mentioned various strata of the society that supported the team to record a resounding success. He promised to always be available to offer his advise for the continued development of the state. Finally, he thanked Governor Abdullahi Adamu for the opportunity given to him to serve the state as its fist civilian deputy governor. He said he feels very fulfilled and accomplished.

In response to the speech of the out-going deputy governor, Governor Adamu recalled the circumstances that led to the appointment of Gye-Wado as deputy governor in August 2003. He said it was a difficult thing to contend with change, but that Gye-Wado was a shinning example of how to accept change when it came. He commended him for his readiness to drop from the team as deputy governor in order to get the gubernatorial ticket running and gave no indication that he was aggrieved. Governor Adamu restated that during the first tenure of the team, there was nothing close to what one may refer to as a conflict between them. He therefore assured the occasion that Gye-Wado would always remain a part of the state. He used the occasion to advise the people of the state that since elections and electioneering were now over, they should all team up to build a state of their dream.
