Information Technology Has a Fundamental Role to Play in Development

Monday, September 01, 2003

It is pertinent to stress here that our early awareness of the fundamental place of the dynamism in the information industry prompted the establishment of an Information Technology Center in Lafia in the first tenure of the PDP administration in this State. These were the words of Governor Adamu while performing the official opening of a zonal workshop on information technology for confidential secretaries/typists in the judiciary.

Organized by the National Judicial Institute, the workshop brings together professional secretaries and typists from Benue, Kogi, Kwara, Nasarawa, Plateau, Niger states and the Federal Capital Territory, Abuja.

Explaining the rationale behind the workshop, Governor Adamu said that it was coming at the right time because there is much to be taught and learnt in this jet–age when every available information is being computerised.  The era of the unwieldy manual “Olympia” typewriter and bogus records is fast giving way to the computer.  The Judiciary should, therefore, not be left behind in this contemporary race. His hope therefore is the day Judges will not have to take down court proceedings like stenographers; but sit with ease when judicial proceedings are being computerised.

Speaking earlier, the Administrator of the National Judicial Institute, Mr. J. Ajakaiye said the workshop was put together to update the knowledge and proficiencies of the staff in computing and information technology in order to enhance their performance. He said the National Judicial Institute had recognized that information technology was an important tool for judicial processes. It was therefore imperative that they try to make all the supportive staff computer literate.

Hon. Labaran Maku, Deputy Governor of Nasarawa State, members of the National Judicial Institute as well as superior court judges for all the states in the zone attended the opening ceremony which took place at the Ibrahim Abacha Youth Center, Lafia.
