Workshop Opens For District Heads

Friday, December 19, 2003

Traditional District Heads in Nasarawa state have been warned not to cause confusion and tension in their domains. This advise was given by Governor Adamu while declaring open a 3 day workshop for newly appointed district heads in the state.

The workshop, which is the first to hold in the history of the state, was organized by the state ministry of local government and chieftaincy affairs in conjunction with Muhas consultants. Governor Adamu at the workshop recalled how his administration increased the number of traditional institutions in the state from 9 first class chiefs/emirs to 11; second class from 2 to 10 and third class to was increased to a total of 27. Similarly, district areas were increased from 35 to 152 while village areas were increased from 156 to 503. These increases, according to the Governor were to enhance the participation of the grassroots in the present administration and to ensure that the local populace was all informed of government policies.

As part of the welfarist programmes of government, Governor Adamu stated that his administration has taken over the payment of salaries to all first class emirs and chiefs. Further more, in order to ameliorate the adverse impact of delayed payment of salaries and allowances to the traditional rulers, all their entitlements will now be paid under the 1st charge along with salaries of other public servants in the state.

Speaking earlier, both the Commissioner for local government, Halilu Bala and the managing partner of Hamus consultants thank the state government for sponsoring the workshop and urged the participants to take the lessons to be learnt seriously.

The three-day workshop will end on Friday December 19, 2003.
